Synopsis

Beyond justice a symposium on spatial and environmental justice research into connected autonomous renewable energy vehicles (CAREV) and the city focuses on CAREVs designed to reflect current vehicle use patterns in the city, transforming cities environmentally. The study investigates a variety of CAREV’s and emphasises the use of two-seater vehicles with a narrow ergonomic footprint (CAREV-S) which reflects use patterns. CAREVs are likely to have impacts and increase consumerism and traffic movements, this is a complex field of investigation with no single answers. The spatial study demonstrates that the use of CAREV-S can result in high city functionality, decongestion, increased road capacity, reduced environmental impacts, improved resilience, flexibility and spatial justice. This transdisciplinary symposium challenges the usual debates about vehicles and the city by reimagining human behaviour, CAREV_S and the city with an environmental Lens.

Aim of the symposium

This symposium aims to collect new data and to collaborate with a broader research and transdisciplinary community to hear multiple voices, introduce new ideas and reflect upon spatial studies. This method aims to reveal how architecture and design practice shape society and culture, their influence on intergenerational justice and provide tools for urban design investigations. Furthermore, synthesised research is used to assist us in better understanding our interactions with CAREVs and how a change in the fleet[1] will allow for deeper changes in the city fabric.

[1] ‘The fleet’ in this report, refers to all the vehicles in a nation. The notion is that a nation’s fleet will change from human driven to autonomous vehicle driven vehicles; this would require a ‘change in the fleet’.
