Aims, objectives & hypothesis of the research

The aim of the research is to investigate and understand how a social and environmental framework should mediate the development of CAV/AV technologies and how society might shape future cities, semiotics and mobility in relation to evolving and increasing demands for spatial, urban and climate justice.

Research objectives

The research objectives are:

  • to identify the challenges required with an environmental approach to future AV/CAV mobility

  • to develop an environmentally systemic approach to investigating the gaps in knowledge and practice concerning the shaping of a city and mobility through CAREV in the built environment

  • to develop strategies to explore design as a way of thinking, inventing and critically assessing research findings as part of the integrated symposium method, a cognitive extension of the Capra–Luisi ecological framework

  • to disseminate the findings, including environmental principles and social education for CAREV/AV, and to assist with discussion through exhibiting material, consultation and publication

The project hypothesis

The project hypothesis is that achieving the cultural aspiration of magical, safe, efficient, convenient, reliable, just and synthetically intelligent transportation through CAREV requires a transdisciplinary approach to conceptualising the integration of CAV with the city, the environment and humanity. A framework for achieving environmental, spatial and social justice is required through holistic and transdisciplinary research practices. A living transport ecology, or systemic semiotic technoecology, can improve safety, communications, spatial justice and public health.
